Formed for the improvisation nights Dynamo in Brest, France, this quartet made of musicians covering a wide variety of musical styles creates a sound that mixes electronic (samples, cuts, sound treatments) and acoustic elements (guitars, saxophone, trumpet). They're playing moody ballads that sound as if they would come out from one of David Lynch's movies. Like in the films of Hollywood's master of bizarre pieces, there is something like a dark and poisonous colour broken by red thunderlights and blue cigarette smoke. The music spawnes some odd characters and landscapes while the listener makes out some more friendly faces that loom up out of this nowhere place: the voice of Zalie Bellaccico, Milanese streets sounds, a lazy flute, or some distant breathing swim on the surface of this deep troubled waters. "Paroles de Navarre" is an invitation for opening the red curtain of this Dark Jazz cabaret made of shimmering and whirling walls.

For pop listeners without a feeling for depressive soundscapes it might be boring – for us it's one of the best musical outputs we've discovered in the past years. If you like BOHREN UND DER CLUB OF GORE or THE KILIMANJARO DARKJAZZ ENSEMBLE, you should be all ears. *Denovali Records

Label head Tony Wilson conducted Factory Records with an uneasy cocktail of quixotic enthusiasm and loose purse strings. Wilson never signed any artist to a contract, and in 1982 he plunged a good deal of the profits into the new Hacienda club, whose low ticket and bar prices ended up costing the label 10,000 quid a month. The Hacienda, however, left an indelible mark on UK dance culture, proving that, yes, it's possible to be crowd-pleasing and forward-thinking at the same time.

Bracketed between 1980 and 1987, this long-overdue collection of Factory's clubbier 12-inch outings—mixed and curated by Bill Brewster—takes us from the beginnings of New Order right up to the moment when groups like the Happy Mondays started absorbing Chicago house and Detroit techno and fusing it with red-eyed, psychedelic pop. As a result, what you get here is largely a collection of brilliant blueprints: transitional and exploratory tracks that reflect a kitchen-sink, tabula rasa production attitude. The influence of the label's infamous in-house producer Martin Hannett, who gave Joy Division its signature icy sound, is palpable, but it's grafted onto much groovier and funkier material.

Ranging from dubby, experimental instrumentals like Hood's "Salvation" to sugary laser-boogie like "Express" and "Look into My Eyes" by 52nd Street, Factory's wild diversity is on full display. While it's an excellent overview, the "dance" term is sometimes only loosely applicable. Most of the comp is given over to DJ-friendly numbers from Quando Quango and Marcel King, but other offerings like Swamp Children's avant-jazz stronk " You've Got Me Beat" and The Durutti Column's kosmiche guitar bliss don't exactly come across like body-movers.

Nonetheless, FAC. DANCE offers a number of revelations for hardcore fans, like the hallucinatory Beat-poetry spoken word vocals on "Art on 45," as well as several groundbreakers like Section 25's stunning, futuristic "Looking From a Hilltop," which takes a gritty synth-pop formula and runs it through a darkly psychedelic, Bambaataa-sized ghetto blaster. Like Joy Division, Section 25 segued from abrasive, doomy post-punk into dance music—their earlier classic "Dirty Disco" shows them already halfway there, with disco hi-hats and lyrics like "I want your body…I want your mind…." yelped over cavernous snares and guitar shred. The group's closest cohort was arguably A Certain Ratio, whose "Knife Slits Water" remains one of their finest moments and serves as the compilation's high point: When else did stewing eerie melodies and twisted effects into a groovy shuffle powered by slap bass and crunchy claps make quite as much sense as on Factory? *Strut

Twenty seven years after its first release from the legendary “Creep Records”, the Vyllies EP (mini album) was re-released from the new-born Greek indie label “Geheimnis Records” in a limited edition version of 300 copies, so that it will keep haunting the dreams of generations of dark alternative fans to come… The band was consisting of 3 Swiss girls, Manü Moan, Ursula Nun and Ilona Prism. After this first mini LP, recorded in Greece in 1984, they made 2 full albums (1985 and 1987), one 12’’ and a 7’’ single and then perished into eternal oblivion… Summer 1983 : They came to Greece for holidays, met the singer and front man of another legendary group (Yell-O-Yell) from Creep Records, Fill Scars (ΦιλώταΒασκαλή), then he introduced them to Babis Dalidis, owner of Creep Records and the rest was history… 5 tracks – 5 stories – 5 fairytales, like the ones, granny used to tell us, but in this case dark, gloomy and obscure… and with no happy end. “Purple Gorilla”, Whispers In The Shadow”, “Madness”, of course… “Babylon” and “Rare”. These tracks were - and still are - something like a baptism into the dark/goth-alternative music scene, to anyone who is not a newcomer, but, after his acquaintance with the big names of this music genre and the bizarre sounds of it, he enters in a purgatory-like state and it is necessary, in order to become a true and sophisticated member of this community, to have listened to these songs. A very hard to find record, which during the 90’s (mostly) and the 00’s, probably earned the attention it never had in the 80’s and became one of the most expensive and sought-after records in Greece and all over the world. The prices and the myths behind them, that we’ve heard during all these years probably contributed even more to the legend of the band and the record itself… March 2011 :Geheimnis Records proudly announced the re-issue on vinyl of this “precious” album, trying to put an end to its unattainable status… 300 limited edition copies (now printed in England), with a record-size insert (for all of you who have lost the original small insert, the new one is made for you !!!) and rare photos of the band. Last but not least, we must not forget, the black inner sleeve, which matches perfectly both the dark atmosphere of the record and the yellowish parts of its artwork. *

I wanted to listen to this for some days now but i kept saying i'll do it some other time...

So at 3 in the morning, smoking like a maniac i overcame my fears and ambitions believing that Omar Souleyman will be great only if he is performing in a traditional wedding in Syria and that he is not suitable for the western culture, i said i should give it a go.

I still don't get the clear sound of the recording and i miss the "fly in the shit" C60 mire...

My final conclusion is that the "flies" died from the prolonged keyboard solos and the bigger versions of the tracks.

It works just fine for me, but i miss the money tossing in the air, the golden watches, the bodyguards and the local Syrian television after midnight...

Few records imply unconditional certainties ever since one reads the notice of their release. In the case of Slugabed – a fusion of Nikos Veliotis’ cello’s severity with Klaus Filip’s sinewaves – we’re sure both of a first-rate artistic assertion and a direct proportion between dearth of movement and emotional response. As if some weather divinity had foreseen my listening intentions, this morning has begun with what the trade defines as a “plumbeous” sky that is pouring rain at varying levels of intensity. In the meantime, the music unfolds as expected but not less connecting, the prevalence of a droning malaise complemented by alternatively escalating and declining radiations generated by the electronics. The latter carve ample craters in the frequency surface, unhurriedly shifting the weight across the various regions of the audio spectrum. Veliotis adapts his technique to the changes, looking to maintain the extreme gradualness of the gestures also in the upper range of the instrument. Thus, don’t be fooled by the inherent conventions of the word “drone”: this is a piece whose subtleties are revealed little by little, leading the listener through diverse kinds of expression of interior silence via fading shades, brittle rigorousness and – you guessed right – large doses of gloominess. An acoustic mechanism that should be left reiterating its cycle all day long just to inhale the fumes, no matter the level of comprehension. Unfathomable or totally clear, depending – as always – on the receiver’s mindset.

Iron Curtain was a minimal wave band from Santa Barbara, CA, who played regularly in the Los Angeles underground music scene. They were heavily influenced by The Cure, OMD, Joy Division, and Kraftwerk. The band released several records in small quantities even though they had a great fan base, and hence over the years these releases have gained mass cult appeal which has driven the prices of used copies up into the thousands. After several years of searching for Steve Fields (front man for the group), Pylon Records is pleased to bring the entire catalog into print for the first time on CD. Featured on the CD is the cult classic “The Condos”, the goth-club-friendly track “Tarantula Scream”, and the much-sought-after track “Legalize Heroin”, which has a stark resemblance to My Bloody Valentine.

This record was originally included free with the first 1000 copies of Nature Unveiled, in a plastic sleeve with a sticker. It was later reissued on Harbinger (HARB 001) with a picture sleeve in 1990 with the Nurse With Wound track remixed and retitled, and with "Stoned" added to the title.

I have a thing about 80's greek bands as you can sometimes see by yourself in my blog-junkyard. Especialy for the desent ones. The band SYNTHETIKI was created in 1985, in Piraeus (Greece), consisting of 3 members - Apostolis Loverdos (lyrics, music, guitar) Dionysis Avgerinos (lyrics, music, keyboards) Dimosthenis Tsanetoglou ( technician) Their LP "SYNTHETIKI" was recorded in 1990 and only 500 copies of this album were circulated at the time. In 1993 the band broke up. In 2010 they released their second album "PROSOPEIA - EFIALTES" which was another landmark in the greek scene that has been dried for more than 15 years in the dark wave, post punk and minimal synth releases.

Anyways i really like these guys so i will repost the link that they gave earlier to their fans for getting their latest album for free and i am looking forward to hear anything new from them and hopefully before another 17 years passing by. Cheers :)

Almost New York represents the latest chapter in Alvin Lucier’s migration away from the world of experimental electronic music, a move he began in the 1980s. Mr. Lucier chronicles the challenges he faced achieving working with acoustic instruments in the CD’s liner notes, ultimately discussing the microtonal impulses at the heart of the music featured on this album. The four works on the recordings two discs – Twonings, Almost New York, Broken Line and Coda Variations – are thoughtful explorations in extreme subtlety. The slow transformation typifying these pieces comes as no surprise reading the end of Mr. Lucier’s prose introduction to the CD: one of his principal inspirations was the natural out-of-tune-ness symptomatic to performances of Morton Feldman’s protracted String Quartet #2, “by the end…the instruments have drifted a little out of tune – there being now time to re-tune during a live performance – acquiring a patina that comes with age.”

Twonings, the CD’s first track, exemplifies the techniques Mr. Lucier applies in the album’s other compositions. The work is written for cello and piano and explores the slight discrepancies in pitch between the piano’s equal temperament and the assigned just intonation in the cello part. The notes for this work specifically site the, “acoustic phenomena” and “audible beating” that should result from the music’s attempted unisons. Indeed, the performance serves this goal with loyalty: cellist Charles Curtis and pianist Joseph Kubera deliver the music in a disciplined manner devoid of traditional expressivity, which makes the friction between the two instrument’s tunings more dramatic.

The album’s title track, Almost New York, sadly seems like the kind of piece I wish I could witness in a concert. Written for one flutist rotating between five flutes, this piece uses pure wave oscillators to create a kind of synthetic drone against which the flutist plays long tones. After each note, the performer is supposed to switch to a different type of flute, walking around the performance space as he or she cycles through instruments. Clearly, this is the kind of thing you want to be in the room for, but sound engineer Tom Hamilton simulates the spatial effects very well with panning. Like Twonings before it, Almost New York focuses on the microtonal differences between multiple voices, in this case the flute and slowly sliding up and down oscillators. Flutist Robert Dick delivers a performance similar in its sparse character to that of the previous track. As we have seen, of course, this style is important to Mr. Lucier’s compositions given the subtle ideas he transforms over the course of each work.

The third tack, Broken Line, is the most rhythmically active of the whole album and is scored for Vibraphone, piano and Flute. Rhetorically, however, the work is a duo inasmuch as Joseph Kubera’s piano and percussionist Danny Tunick‘s vibraphone are used in tandem as a fixed-pitch wall against which the extended glissandi Robert Dick’s modified flute constantly abrades. Broken Line essentially represents a role-reversal from Almost New York as the flute challenges the fixed intonation of the piano and vibraphone. The most concise work on the CD at 12:21, Broken Line’s instrumentation alludes to Morton Feldman’s Why Patterns?. Though it possesses a different process than Mr. Feldman’s work, Broken Line is a similarly persuasive advocate for moment-form music and – thanks to its rhythmic activity – is the most accessible representative of this compositional style on the album.

Mr. Lucier’s connection to Morton Feldman’s music and philosophy coalesces in Almost New York’s final track, Coda Variations, which is based on the solo tuba coda from Mr. Feldman’s Durations 3. Mr. Lucier’s Variations takes the eight notes and double fermata from Durations and, “[subjects them] to seven sets of permutations of sixty three notes each.” The variations incorporate special microtonal fingerings on the tuba developed by the performer, Robin Hayward, and composer Marc Sabat. As you can see, Coda Variations plays on the same subtle theme of intonation as the rest of the album, but presents the changes in a slowly unfolding melodic line, not in the vertical dissonances of the earlier tracks. This makes listening to Coda Variations an exercise in concentration, much like it must be performing a composition that develops so subtly over such a long period of time. *Sequenza 21

In the cold and dreary winter of 2009, alone in his bedroom and hidden from the darkness of the world outside Justin Paul Vallesteros had begun working on something that would change his life forever. What began as a couple notes played in experimentation soon transformed into vibrant melodies that soon shook Vallesteros’ musical foundation to the core. Guitar chords laced over pulse sating synth melodies and drum rhythms was a departure from Justin’s previous work; he began to create the dreamy nostalgic pop music that is Craft Spells. Justin is a California native who now finds residence in the mid-size town of Stockton, the heart of California. Craft Spells is the epitome of the recent uprising of the DIY music scene. Coming from a place not known for its musical history or impact on music culture it seemed destined for Craft Spells to stay as a bedroom pop project with no final destination in sight. But soon the shear amount of blog volume his work began to generate was unimaginable. Sites like Weekly Tape Deck, Pasta Primavera, No Modest Bear and Pitchfork’s Forkcast took notice and thus began the never ending worldwide posting and re-posting on blog after blog of Craft Spells. The sound is led by Justin’s blissful voice, backed behind beautiful guitar melodies over heavenly synths, pop basslines and looped rhythms. Captured Tracks has released 7” single for the song “Party Talk” and will release the debut LP due out in Spring 2011 called Idle Labor. 2011 is going to be a busy year now that Justin has set up a live band for future touring. Keep a look out for tour dates in Europe and US come the new year. In no time at all, Justin has been able to move out of Dave Brubeck and Pavement’s shadow to create something his own which he shares with the ever continuing admiration of the world.

I just want to anounce to all of my fellow imaginary friends / readers (i am sure that they don't exist though) that i am leaving for London in a few days and this will be my last post for the next 2 weeks or so...

Anyways i am leaving you in the sweet arms of Wasted Youth's (U.K.) Wild & Wondering which came out by Cherry Red in 1981.

Final words... I wish you all dark dwellers out there to have half of the fun that i am planning to have at London, and believe me it's more than enough.... :)

Six Organs of Admittance - Asleep On The Floodplain (Drag City 2011)

While San Francisco guitarist Ben “Six Organs of Admittance” Chasny has put out records consistently since the mid-’90s, he changed the game, hard, with the ‘05 release School of the Flower, A full studio setup served to “elevate his rusty drones and Robbie Basho-inspired folk figures to completely different realms.” Following that ‘un, he created a series of increasingly complex and stylish neo-psych long-players (making use of the LP format to create projects best heard within it, front-to-back), culminating in 2009’s gloriously weird and diverse Luminous Night.

Long-haulers may regard this new joint, Asleep on the Floodplain as a bit of a throwback to earlier records such as Dark Noontide and particularly Compathia — the music Chasny recorded in his living room — and that will not be wholly inaccurate. While Asleep On the Floodplain (his sixth project with Chicago’s Drag City label in as many years) retains the professional studio clarity, it bothers less with the cerebral experimentation, hewing closer to the simple acoustic meditations of simpler days.

At least, Floodplain is ultimately simple. “Dawn, Running Home” rests on several layers of noisy musique concrete, but still drives in its charming embedded melody. The entrancing 12-minute “S/word and Leviathan” begins with some of Chasny’s most sophisticated acoustic guitar work and blends in layers of noise until it pins the meters, but it’s still more about the mood than the composition, and neither is really anything too fancy. Even the disc’s weirdest track, the reverb-and-drone bath “River of My Youth,” sounds, in context, much gentler and more grounded than the sum of its arbitrary parts.

Despite his irrepressible psychedelic and prog instincts, Ben Chasny has always been fluent enough in folk and the blues to justify his weirdest whimsy. That’s probably why the “freak folk” bubble never damaged his credibility. With Asleep On the Floodplain, Chasny returns not just to his personal “roots,” but also to the roots of popular music itself. He gets back to nature, or as close as can be expected. It’s a surprising, refreshing shift of focus.

I hate human nature sometimes, i just can't stand it....

I am using this note as a fact that i am shocked and pissed as well for one and only reason. To read this all again and burn my rage correctlyin a couple of days.

You see Brother Ray Says got attacked by a 55plus years old man who calls himself your fellow citizen. I don't like violence, i find it childish and stupid as i said again some minutes ago after speaking with someone that i treasure much. It's even funny if you see this sight across your street. Picture this: a mad old man fighting another man in his 30's for no real reason at all... Not really my style.

How can you describe him? A human? not really... An animal? well most of the animals i've ever seen are kinder and a lot more delicate than this!

My reaction to the whole thing is cold inner rage. I don't want to get in other ways or even crossing my paths with people i don't care at all. As the few of you that you will read this can imagine the thing didn't ended right at all

and as a result i made one more enemy.

The Anals - Commando Of Love 7" (sweet rot 2006)

Debut, and quite possibly only, release from this two-piece digital-punk band from the wild streets of Metz, France. The tragic story is that one-half of this band (Benoit) passed away in late 2007, leaving this batch of recordings out of which Sweet Rot cherry-picked this single, although I've heard much of their output via CDR and this seems to be just the tip of the old iceberg. With links to AH Kraken and Electric Guitars and part of Le Grande Triple Alliance Internationalle de L'Est , whose triple pronged cross logo you've probably noticed on records by Feeling of Love, Normals (Seb Normal handled the recording on this) and other French genre-benders. "Commando of Love" is a synth-droner that tells a story of love in WWII. "Wake Up You're Dead" fills the flipside with a digital take on relentless Brainbombs-like beat-hammering awash with freeform guitar damage and desperate vocals. For fans of the more evil side of French gluewave. Scum stats: first 100 on white, the other 400 on black. Sweet Rot scores major points with this last batch of sleeves as well, wonderful glued pockets on textured paper with stark b&w art.

Winter Drones - Blood In The Coffin (weird forest 2010)

Leon Dufficy is primarily known as guitarist in the hippie-jam outfit, Hush Arbors but now, he steps into his own as the driving force behind Winter Drones. Sounding like the perfect combination of fuzzed-out ambient drift, shoegaze swirl and propulsive pop sensibilities, Winter Drones have slowly gained attention in their native UK with a handful of obscure CDr/cassette releases and compilation appearances. Earlier this year, the band's debut album,BLOOD IN THE COFFIN, came out as a limited-edition tape on UK micro-label, Sexbeat Records.

While legions of artists are mining the ambient style, Dufficy stands out because of his ability to develop his soundscapes, infusing them with a touch of melody to impart a sense of emotion. Songs like the lead-off track, "Watch Your Eyes", set the mood perfectly while "Bongs Dream" shows Dufficy's intuitive understanding that the perfectly weighted note/chord can add tremendous emotional resonance to an atmospheric piece.

But Dufficy isn't some common Nu-Age denizen and the album really shines when the drums come in and the band rocks out. "Winnie Cooper's Bones" and "Two Long Weeks Part 2" find Dufficy perfectly capable of crafting memorable songs that stick with the listener. The album's centerpiece, "Stiff Wizard", serves as a thesis statement for the entire album. Over 10+ minutes, the track starts with flanged/fuzzed guitars swishing about and sounding like jet engines on a runway. As the piece builds towards take-off, a simple radar-like melody begins pinging and the song takes flight when the drums and driving guitar chords launch in -- a perfect microcosm of the whole record.

One of the first bands that created their music by the use of electronics , one of a few those days in Greece.
Formed on 1988 by Alex Macheras and Nik Veliotis with Coti K.,their "soundman" and George Geranios the one to complete the line-up and eventually replace Veliotis who followed an amazingly respected and important career as a cello "improvisionist". They stopped releasing records as i.t.n.f on 1996 and their last live performance took place in the summer of the same year.

Scorpion Violente - s/t 12" (Bruit Direct 2010)

New mindless electro minimalism from France, part of the whole crew with the logo (I suppose it is called “La Grande Triple Alliance Internationale de l’Est,” an umbrella operation for A.H. Kraken, the Anals, the Feeling of Love and related parties). It took a few listens to grok whether this duo was taking the piss, but there is a method here, even if it’s one that sets the drum pattern apart from the speed of the notes played on the synth, either to disorient, or to show the listener that they don’t know/don’t care how to make it work like everybody else. That little difference is what makes “Roma Violente,” a long-ish, static disco-minimal melody into the serious track that it is. Examples on the flipside are more spare and with somewhat of an industrial bend – “Mi Pute Mi Soumise” marches along with distortion and death in tow, while “Ich Kann Nicht” delivers the Germanic, stark yelling and murderous shocks you might expect from such a title. Another great record from B-D that doesn’t fit neatly into any one style or category. 500 copies.

RIP: Ingrid Pitt 1937-2010

Ingrid Pitt, seductive queen of the Hammer horror films who survived a Nazi concentration camp as a girl, has died aged 73, a spokesman for her agent said on Wednesday.

The actress started her screen career in the mid-1960s with roles in Spanish films and minor, uncredited parts in "Doctor Zhivago" and "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum."

She appeared in the 1968 classic "Where Eagles Dare" alongside Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood, and five years later in the mystery drama "The Wicker Man."

But it was for her roles in erotic horror films "The Vampire Lovers" (1970) and "Countess Dracula" (1971) that she was best known in Britain.

"Underrated as both an actress and a writer, Pitt was a warm but stubbornly enigmatic figure," said Marcus Hearn, a historian of Hammer horror movies and a friend of the actress.

Pitt was also a writer, producing two novels set during the Peron era in Argentina and several horror-related works of fiction.

She was born in Poland in 1937 to a mother of Jewish descent, and was interned in a Nazi concentration camp during World War Two at the age of five -- an experience she recounted in her autobiography "Life's a Scream."

She told an interviewer in 2006 that she did not particularly enjoy watching horror movies.

"I was in a concentration camp as a child and I don't want to see horror," Pitt said. "I think it's very amazing that I do horror films when I had this awful childhood. But maybe that's why I'm good at it."

Her autobiography also describes Pitt's search for her father throughout the European Red Cross refugee camps and her escape from East Berlin, one step ahead of the police.

"I always had a big mouth and used to go on about the political schooling interrupting my quest for thespian glory," she wrote. "I used to think like that. Not good in a police state."

Pitt collapsed recently and died in London on Tuesday, shortly after her 73rd birthday.

Coil - The Ape of Naples (Threshold House 2005)

Although the accidental death of Coil's Jhonn Balance in November 2004 came as a horrific shock to his friends and fans, in many ways it seemed an event for which Balance himself was hardly unrehearsed. As his longtime Coil partner Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson has put it, Balance's work has "described or addressed that Very Moment" time and again. And so it is on The Ape of Naples, an exceptional collection assembled from Balance's final recordings and earlier, uncompleted material originally recorded at Trent Reznor's New Orleans studio. Given the circumstances of its construction, the album is a remarkably unified work, its every meditative gesture alloyed with a looming, unmistakable sense of impending loss and/or transition.

Throughout their 20-year recording career, Coil have struck a careful symmetry between spontaneous, animistic creation and exacting ritualistic structure, often with specific alchemical intentions for each record. So while it is impossible to know what ultimate design Balance had for the material on The Ape of Naples, credit must be given to Christopherson for his skillful and devoted stewardship to this music. Several of these songs-- "A Cold Cell", "Teenage Lightning 2005", "Heaven's Blade"-- have previously appeared in another forms. Here, however, Christopherson has significantly reworked each track, mixing electronics and acoustic instruments with the help of sympathetic collaborators Simon Norris, Cliff Stapleton, and Thighpaulsandra-- resulting in an album of astonishing cohesion, vitality, and undisguised poignancy.

Judged by the evidence on these 11 tracks, Balance remained a commanding and utterly captivating presence to the end, and these selections do well to showcase his expressive, multifaceted vocals. Augmented by the carnival textures of accordion, hurdy-gurdy, and singing saw, his vocals on the theatric "Tattooed Man" has an almost effortless elegance ("There's a man lying down in a grave somewhere/ with the same tattoos as me") while beneath the agitated electronics and cool jazz snatches on "I Don't Get It" his heavily effected vocals spin as just another enigmatic cogwheel in Coil's diabolical engine.

The album closes with its most curious track, a cover of "Going Up?", the theme song from the long-running British sitcom "Are You Being Served?" As the closing song of Balance's final live performance, the cover has taken on an unlikely significance in Coil's history. In their hands it undergoes such an extraordinary transmutation that it'd likely go unrecognized by even the staunchest fans of the BBC comedy. With its tempo slowed to a funereal waltz, the song gathers an eerie, unsettling force as Balance is joined on vocals by Francis Testory, the two alternately repeating the lines "Going up" and "It just is" with a contented resignation-- as serene a conclusion one could expect from a shaman who never shied from penning his own epitaphs... *Pitchfork

Throbbing Gristle - TG24 (2002)

Throbbing Gristle were noted for their live performances, which were often experimental and quite different from their pre-recorded work. In addition to studio albums, a large number of recordings of live shows were released, of varying sound quality. A concise history of Throbbing Gristle and COUM Transmissions can be found in Simon Ford's book Wreckers of Civilisation. A 25 CD boxed set,TG24, documenting many live Throbbing Gristle performances was released in December 2002. A follow-up to this boxset chronicling the last 10 performances was released as TG+ in January of 2004. These releases accumulated recordings that had originally been released on cassette-only boxed sets and individually released vinyl albums of official and bootleg status. Long out of circulation, the new releases sparked a renewed interest in the band.

Throbbing Gristle were scheduled to play a live show in May 2004 at the RE~TG festival, but the festival was cancelled due to poor ticket sales, rising costs and scheduling complications. They decided to play anyway and set up a show at The Astoria in London on Sunday May 16th 2004, which was the same day they were to play at RE~TG. The show was free but open only to those who had tickets to RE~TG, whether they had obtained a refund or transferred the ticket to a later concert at All Tomorrow's Parties, in December 2004. The show was filmed by the band, and was released as part of the DVD box set TGV. It was Throbbing Gristle's first live performance in nearly 23 years to the day.

The reformed band (with all four original members) then played a concert in Italy in June 2005 and two concerts at the Volksbühne, Berlin, Germany on December 31, 2005 and January 1, 2006. The first show was a live performance and the second an improvised live soundtrack to Derek Jarman's film In The Shadow Of The Sun. On December 29, 2005, an exhibition entitled 'Industrial Annual Report' opened at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin-Mitte. It was a major retrospective exhibition of artworks and historical documents produced by Throbbing Gristle, curated by Markus Müller, in collaboration with Cosey Fanni Tutti. *taken from wikipedia

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Christopherson, a.k.a. Sleazy, member of such seminal groups as Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, and Coil. He reportedly died in his sleep yesterday, November 24, at the age of 55.

The initial announcement came roughly an hour ago, at around 4 AM EST, when Throbbing Gristle members Cosey Fanni Tutti and Chris Carter tweeted the same message:

Our dearest beautiful Sleazy left this mortal coil as he slept in peace last night.words cannot express our grief...
